Someone on LinkedIn today asked about how to find an agent. Here’s my answer: Be VERY careful. Your future and all your effort to write the biography are in the hands of this agent. Ask for references and call them. Find out what publishing companies the agent works with and call someone there to find out what their relationship is. Due diligence is the key word for this marriage.
And please keep in mind an agent is not a miracle worker and each agent has ideas about how the book could be promoted.
Most publishers these days are not in the promotion business except for the top 10% of their stable of writers. Your agent will need to be proactive with the publisher to get anything accomplished beyond just printing the book and sending out a few samples.
Your work has just begun. YOU are the marketing person now. You or someone that you hire to do it. Many books are sold thru the internet now, so make sure you get known everywhere possible on the internet. Start with your email signature to include, below your name, author of “ABC:the greatest book ever written on the subject.” And then get a well-done, search engine friendly website to assist in the promotion of the book.
These are some of the ideas that have helped other authors, so I hope all this helps to answer some of your questions.
